Wesley Hoedt joins Southampton

Southampton have been heavily linked with a move for Wesley Hoedt over the course of the transfer window.

According to official website of Southampton FC, Wesley Hoedt joins the Saints.

The Netherlands international has joined Lazio in July 2015. Wesley Hoedt made 61 appearances across all competitions for Lazio, scoring 4 goals and supplying one assist in return.

The 23-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in Netherlands.

Wesley Hoedt has represented Netherlands at Under-20 and Under-21 level, winning 10 caps, before making his senior international debut in March 2017. As a member of Netherlands national football team, Hoedt has won 4 caps.

On Tuesday, Lazio confirmed the sale of Wesley Hoedt to Southampton for a fee reported to be around 18 million euros.

Wesley Hoedt was high in demand this summer, with him having enjoyed a sublime season for Lazio last term.

The Netherlands international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Mauricio Pellegrino has wanted to target in the summer transfer window.

Mauricio Pellegrino was a long term admirer of Wesley Hoedt and believes he can get the most out of the Netherlands international.




Southampton are in the market for just a handful of statement signings this summer who can improve the first-team.

According to the report in British Media, the Netherlands international signs a five-year deal with Southampton. This would make Hoedt the club’s most expensive ever defender.

Wesley Hoedt commented: “I’m really happy to be here. I think Southampton is a really big club, so it’s a good next step for me to come here and to play in the Premier League and try to help the best I can.”
