Newcastle keen to land Duje Caleta-Car

The defensive department of the Newcastle squad needs quality additions this winter.

According to multiple reports emanating from England, Newcastle are keen to land Olympique Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car.

The 25-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

The Croatia international was signed by Olympique Marseille in July 2018 from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee of 19 million euros. The 25-year-old has a contract until 2023 with the club.

The centre-back has featured in 11 matches for Marseille this term, netting one goal.

The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Croatia. Caleta-Car has also left his mark at the international stage after netting one goal in 20 senior appearances for the Croatia national team.

The Marseille manager does not see him in his plans and would be open to letting him leave.

Eddie Howe wants to sign a new centre-back and Caleta-Car is one of the names at the top of his wishlist.

The Croatia international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Howe wants to target in the winter transfer window.

The Magpies are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The former Red Bull Salzburg man is often quick to scan the danger and is not shy of getting stuck in with some well-timed tackles to help secure possession back for his side.

According to the report, “Olympique Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car is interesting Newcastle. The Telegraph says Newcastle are keen on bringing Caleta-Car to Tyneside in the January transfer window. The Croatian defender has fallen out of favour at Olympique Marseille since the start of the season and could be on his way to the Premier League. The Magpies are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements with them currently languishing second bottom of the Premier League with the worst defensive record in the division. The Toon have been linked with a move for England internationals Kieran Trippier and James Tarkowski ahead of the January transfer window opening.”

Newcastle will have to come up with the right proposal to convince Caleta-Car to join the club.

A club with Newcastle’s resources should be able to afford him easily.

It is claimed that Marseille are open to letting Caleta-Car go.

Good signing for Newcastle?

The Magpies must improve their defensive options and the signing of Caleta-Car would be a step in the right direction.

He will be an ideal choice for Howe as he ticks all the right boxes in terms of what he demands from his defenders.

Stylistically, Caleta-Car would be a great fit in Newcastle.

If Eddie Howe sees him as the right man for his side, Newcastle should quickly make a move to fend off interest from other clubs.
