Leicester eyeing move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling

Leicester City appear to have a genuine interest in signing Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer.

According to the football transfer rumours in British Media (Daily Star), Leicester are eyeing move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

The England international has joined Manchester United from Fulham for a fee in the region of 8 million euros in July 2010. The 27-year-old has a valid contract with Manchester United until June 2019.

Smalling has played 244 times for Manchester United since signing from Fulham, scoring 13 goals and creating 4 assists in that time.

The 27-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in England.

Chris Smalling has represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level, winning 15 caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in September 2011. As a member of England national football team, Chris Smalling has won 31 caps and has scored one goal.

Adding a defender remains Leicester City’s top priority this summer and Craig Shakespeare will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming days.

Craig Shakespeare is a long term admirer of Chris Smalling and believes he can get the most out of the England international.

Leicester City manager will reportedly be handed a huge transfer kitty and the Manchester United defender is thought to be among the manager’s priorities.




Leicester City are in the market for just a handful of statement signings this summer who can improve the first-team.

According to the report in British Media, Smalling has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare is keen on him. Regarding to the same report Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is not targeting a replacement for the England international.

How strong that interest is and whether Leicester City will make a summer move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
