The upcoming winter will see Chelsea improving their defensive department.

The latest reports in England suggest that Chelsea are linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Matthias Ginter.

The Germany international was signed by Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2017 from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of 17 million euros. The 26-year-old has a contract until 2022 with the club.

The 26-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Germany.

Ginter has also left his mark at the international stage after netting 2 goals in 33 senior appearances for the Germany national team.

The Germany international has been in impressive form for Borussia this season and it looks like he caught the eye of many European clubs including Chelsea.

The Blues are looking to sign a centre-back and have identified the 26-year-old as potential transfer target.

The 26-year-old is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Frank Lampard wants to target in the winter transfer window.

Ginter has been a good servant for Monchengladbach, and is a centre-back who places himself in the right positions in defensive situations. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

According to the report, “Chelsea are reportedly readying an approach for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter in January. Despite a summer that saw the Blues spend some £220m, Frank Lampard’s squad rebuild is far from complete. The Blues boss vastly improved his midfield and attack this summer, but strengthening his defence remains a priority. The addition of keeper Edouard Mendy has vastly solidified the Blues. However, Lampard still wants a top-class centre-half brought in. Indeed, he feels that is an area of weakness for Chelsea. Chelsea were linked with Ginter in the summer, before focusing instead on Rice. However, Kicker claims his huge performance for Gladbach against Real Madrid in the Champions League has pushed him to the top of Chelsea’s agenda. With Ginter’s contract due to expire in 2022, Gladbach will be vulnerable to his sale if he does not renew. It’s thought he could be lured away for a fee of around £35m, which for obvious reasons, represents better value than Rice. Gladbach will likely resist any Chelsea approach in January, but it’s felt a move either then or next summer could bear fruit for Lampard.”

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea are willing to pay the asking price for Ginter.
