Tottenham linked with a move for Benfica fullback Alex Grimaldo

The defensive department of the Tottenham squad needs quality additions this summer.

It’s claimed by British media that Tottenham are linked with a move for Benfica fullback Alex Grimaldo.

The Spain international joined Benfica from Barcelona B for a fee in the region of 2.1 million euros in January 2016. His contract expires in the summer of 2023.

In 156 appearances for Benfica, Grimaldo has managed to score 11 goals, and create 30 goals for his teammates.

He’s incredibly experienced for a 24-year-old and still has tons of room for growth.

Alex Grimaldo has represented Spain at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 19 caps and scoring one goal.

His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.

Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new fullback and Alex Grimaldo is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. Mourinho is a known admirer of the player and is reportedly keen on the idea of bringing him this summer.

Tottenham are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

Alex Grimaldo has the talent to play many roles in defense and midfield.

According to the report, “Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing Benfica fullback Alex Grimaldo. Mourinho is in the market for a new left-back this summer and A Bola says Grimaldo is high on his shopping list. The Spain U21 international is now in his fifth season with Benfica, having arrived from Barcelona, and is regarded as among the most consistent performers in Portuguese football. Grimaldo’s deal runs to 2023 and carries a buyout clause of €60m. Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell is also interesting Mourinho, though Spurs must qualify for the Champions League if the England international is to be tempted from the Foxes.”

Tottenham have to fork out a huge transfer fee if they are genuinely interested in the Spain international.

However, a move to Tottenham will be ideal for the 24-year-old at this point of his career.

Spurs fans would certainly love to see him arrive at the club.

Whether he will join Tottenham or not remains to be seen.
