Tottenham to consider bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling
defender Chris Smalling has emerged as a surprise target for Tottenham ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to the football transfer rumours in British Media (Daily Mail), Tottenham will consider bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
The England international has joined Manchester United from Millwall in August 2006. The 27-year-old has a valid contract with Manchester United until June 2019.
Since his arrival from Millwall, Chris Smalling has scored 13 goals and provided four assists in 243 games for Manchester United, including two goals and provided two assists in 36 games in all competitions this season.
The 27-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in England.
Chris Smalling has represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level, winning 15 caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in September 2011. As a member of England national football team, Chris Smalling has won 31 caps and has scored one goal.
Adding a defender remains Tottenham’s top priority this summer and Mauricio Pochettino will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming weeks.
The England international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Mauricio Pochettino wants to target in the summer transfer window.
Smalling is a player who has impressed many European clubs in the last few seasons, and it is understood that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino would prefer playing him as a centre-back.
The 27-year-old will definitely be a good addition to the Tottenham side, which will be competing in the Champions League next season. Smalling would be ideal replacement for Harry Maguire.
How strong that interest is and whether Tottenham will make a summer move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
