The defensive department of the Arsenal squad needs quality additions this winter.
According to the football transfer rumours in Spanish media, Arsenal want to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres.
Torres made 20 appearances across all competitions for Villarreal, scoring one goal and supplying one assist in return.
The 22-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in Spain.
Pau Torres has represented Spain at Under-21 level, winning one cap, before making his senior international debut in November 2019. As a member of Spain national football team, Torres won one cap and he scored one goal.
His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Pau Torres is widely regarded as a key transfer target for Arsenal this winter.
Unai Emery will reportedly be handed a huge transfer kitty and the Villarreal defender is thought to be among the manager’s priorities.
Arsenal are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
Pau Torres is a traditional defender. He is solid while defending and holds his position perfectly.
According to Football Espana, “Arsenal have identified Villarreal defender and Spain international Pau Torres to bolster their backline. The 22-year-old has started all 13 of the Yellow Submarine’s La Liga games to date this campaign and made his debut for the Spanish national team earlier this month – replacing Sergio Ramos in the 7-0 win over Malta, when he also netted. The Gunners are hopeful new signing William Saliba (on loan at Saint Etienne) will provide the long-term future in their backline, and The Sun now reports Torres has been identified as a potential partner. The North London’s club backline has long been a problem area for the side and long-term investment in that position is said to be a fundamental part of their transfer strategy. Torres broke onto the scene last season when he starred on a loan spell at second tier Malaga, where he made 40 appearances, and has now impressed in Villarreal’s back four. It is claimed Torres has a €45m release clause at Villarreal, where he is under contract until 2023.”

Villarreal are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the defender, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.
However, a move to Arsenal will be ideal for the 22-year-old at this point of his career.
How strong that interest is and whether Arsenal will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
