Newcastle United considering a move for Umut Meras

Newcastle are reportedly one of many clubs keeping tabs on Turkey international Umut Meras.

According to the football transfer rumours in British and Turkish media, Newcastle United are considering a move for Le Havre left-back Umut Meras.

Le Havre spent 1.3 million euros to sign the Turkey international from Bursaspor in the summer of 2019. The 24-year-old has two years left on his current contract which expires in 2022.

The left-back has provided one assist in 22 matches for Le Havre this term on all fronts.

The 24-year-old is considered to be one of the best left-backs in Turkey. As a member of Turkey national football team Meras won 6 caps.

His performances have seen him become the target of many European clubs including Newcastle United.

Steve Bruce is looking to shore up his defensive options and Le Havre’s Umut Meras happens to be a target.

The report claims that Newcastle manager has extensively scouted Meras and is considering a move for the left-back.

The Turkey international will offer the Newcastle boss the freedom to be more flexible with his formations, tactics and team selections.

According to the report, “Newcastle United are being linked with a move for Le Havre defender Umut Meras. The 24-year-old plays at left back and has impressed this season. He is rated at roughly £8 million and is a recent Turkish international. The player would be open to a move to the Premier League, per Fotomac. It is unclear if the move for Meras depends on how the Newcastle United takeover progresses. He may be a lower budget target, in case Mike Ashley is still at the helm when the transfer window opens.”

Le Havre are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the left-back, but offers of at least 10 million euros may force the club to consider a deal.

Good signing for Newcastle United?

Signing the left-back could be a good decision as he could improve Steve Bruce’s defensive options.

Although he may not be an immediate improvement to the squad, he could be a valuable signing for the future if he continues to progress at this rate.

Stylistically, he would be a great fit in Newcastle.

It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle will make their move during the summer transfer window.
