The Southampton midfielder has been identified as one of the club’s potential targets as Steve Bruce looks to add more reinforcements in the midfield unit.
As per British media, Newcastle United are poised to land Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.
The Gabon international joined Southampton from Juventus for a fee in the region of 17.25 million euros in August 2017. His contract expires in the summer of 2022. In August 2020, Lemina was sent to Fulham on a season-long loan.
The midfielder has banged in one goal and provided one assist in 30 matches last term on all fronts.
The 27-year-old is considered to be one of the best midfielders in Gabon. Mario Lemina has also left his mark at the international stage after netting 3 goals in 19 senior appearances for the Gabon national team.
The midfielder has just 12 months remaining on his contract and Southampton may consider a deal in this transfer window to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
Steve Bruce wants to sign a new midfielder and Lemina is one of the names at the top of his wishlist.
The report claims that Newcastle manager has extensively scouted Lemina and is considering a move for the midfielder.
The Magpies will have funds to spend in the market and it will be interesting to see how they approach the summer transfer window.
Mario Lemina can play multiple positions in defense and midfield.
According to the report, “Newcastle United are making a transfer move for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina. The Gabon international is on the transfer shortlist made up by the club’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson. The Magpies recruiting chief was at Craven Cottage in May to watch Lemina during his loan spell at Fulham last term. Manager Steve Bruce wants depth added to his squad and Lemina can play multiple positions – defensive midfield and right back. If he signed, Lemina would join a group of midfielders that includes Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Jeff Hendrick.”

Southampton are preparing to sell their midfielder should they receive right offer for him.
Good signing for Newcastle United?
A move away from Southampton will not be only the best move for Lemina, but also for the club.
If Mario Lemina is available for the right price, then he could be a clever acquisition for Newcastle.
The 27-year-old Gabon international could be a very good squad player for Steve Bruce over the next few years. He is at the peak of his career right now and Bruce could bring out the best in him.
If Steve Bruce sees him as the right man for his side, Newcastle should quickly make a move to fend off interest from other clubs.
