Napoli in pole position to sign Nuno Tavares
It’s no secret that Napoli are interested in Benfica’s left-back. But who isn’t?
The latest reports in Italy and England suggest that Napoli are in pole position to sign Nuno Tavares.
The Portugal international joined Benfica from Casa Pia in 2015. His contract expires in the summer of 2024.
In 37 appearances for Benfica, Tavares has managed to score one goal, and create 7 goals for his teammates.
The 21-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Portugal.
Nuno Tavares has represented Portugal at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 21 caps and scoring one goal.
His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Napoli are looking to sign a left-back and have identified the 21-year-old as potential transfer target. They have built a reputation for recruiting young talent from within Europe, predominantly targeting those with sell-on value and immense potential.
Tavares has been long term target of Gennaro Gattuso as the manager look to bolster his defensive options for the next season.
The Italian giants are desperate to make an impact in the summer transfer window.
The left-back can also play as a full-back, offering Gattuso a different option should he change his formation at Napoli.
According to the report, “Napoli have jumped ahead of Newcastle United and Burnley in the race for Benfica wing-back Nuno Tavares. O Jogo says both Premier League clubs have held talks with Benfica about a summer deal for Tavares, but have been left unimpressed by their €30m valuation. In contrast, Napoli are readying a first offer for the defender, after having him scouted for a year. While they don’t wish to do business at Benfica’s assessment, Napoli are willing to get closer to the mark than either of their English rivals. Assisting Napoli in the battle is the Premier League status of Burnley and Newcastle, with both clubs waiting to be sure they’ll be avoiding relegation before committing to big summer outlays.”

Nuno Tavares has all the skillset required to be a success story at Napoli. Therefore, it makes sense for Gattuso to step up his attempts to bring the Portugal left-back to Serie A side.
Napoli fans would certainly love to see him arrive at the club.
It will be interesting to see if Napoli can beat their rivals to the left-back’s signature.
