Manchester United linked with surprise move for Alessandro Bastoni
The defensive department of the Manchester United squad needs quality additions this summer.
According to multiple reports emanating from Italy, Manchester United are linked with surprise move for Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
The Italy international was signed by Inter in August 2017 from Atalanta for a fee of 31.1 million euros. He has a contract until 2024 with the club.
In 44 appearances last season, Bastoni has managed to score one goal and contributed with three assists.
He’s incredibly experienced for a 23-year-old and still has tons of room for growth. The Inter Milan centre-back has also represented the Italy at various youth levels before going on to secure 11 senior caps for his country thus far.
Bastoni is one of the more likely players to be offloaded by Inter this summer and the list of suitors in the Italy international continues to grow.
His impressive performances last season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Erik ten Hag is looking to shore up his defensive options and Inter Milan’s Bastoni happens to be a target. He is a firm fan of Inter centre-back and United could make a move for the player if the financial aspect makes sense.
Ten Hag will reportedly be handed a huge transfer kitty this summer and the Inter centre-back is thought to be among the manager’s priorities.
The former Atalanta man is a very comfortable defender and has qualities which would improve the Manchester United’s backline. His arrival would give United some much needed tactical flexibility.
According to the report, “Manchester United are interested in Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. La Gazzetta dello Sport says Inter president Steven Zhang and chief exec Giuseppe Marotta have told coach Simone Inzaghi that a star will be sold this summer for financial reasons. Bastoni, Milan Skriniar or Lautaro Martinez could be sacrificed. Inter want to sell a key player and United is best placed in the hunt for Bastoni, 23. New manager Erik ten Hag wants a ball-playing defender with a good passing range and United are investigating the possibility of placing a bid for Bastoni.”

Manchester United must improve their defensive options and the signing of Bastoni would be a step in the right direction.
Bastoni has all the skillset required to be a success story at Manchester United. Therefore, it makes sense for Erik ten Hag to step up his attempts to bring the Italy centre-back to Premier League side.
It will be interesting to see if United are willing to pay the asking price for Bastoni.
