Liverpool linked with surprise move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba
There has been numerous defenders linked with Liverpool in past few weeks.
The latest reports in England suggest that Liverpool are linked with surprise move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.
The 28-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.
The Austria international was signed by Bayern Munich in July 2008 from Austria Wien for a fee of 150,000 euros. The 28-year-old has a valid contract with Bayern until June 2021.
The defender has featured in 7 matches for Bayern Munich this term, providing one assist in all competitions.
The 28-year-old is considered to be the best defender in Austria.
His record for Austria is impressive. Alaba has scored 14 goals in 73 matches for Austria at senior level.
Given that his contract is expiring in 8 months and he has not yet signed an extension, the rumors have only heated up in recent weeks. Bayern, however, would prefer to sell him in January than lose him on a free in the summer, so their asking price may not be too high.
Adding a defender remains Liverpool’s top priority this winter and Jürgen Klopp will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming weeks.
The Austria international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Klopp wants to target in the winter transfer window.
The Reds are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
The 28-year-old has a good defensive mind, someone who can spot attacking threats and nullify them. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.
According to the report, “Liverpool are eyeing a January move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba. The Austrian has reportedly turned down the offer of a new contract at Bayern Munich, and could be set to follow in Thiago Acantara’s footsteps. Bild says the Bavarians have failed to reach an agreement with the defender following their latest round of negotiations. The 28-year-old, who is comfortable at centre-back, left-back and in midfield, is on the Reds’ shortlist of potential targets. The Austria international is out of contract next summer and can leave on a free transfer at that point or sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January.”
