Liverpool join the hunt for Alan Varela

The Reds are known for going under the radar and signing some hidden gems.

Reports in the British media claim that Liverpool have joined the hunt for Boca Juniors defensive midfielder Alan Varela.

The 21-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

Varela has come through the youth ranks of Boca Juniors and has successfully managed to establish himself as a member of their senior team. He is under contract at Boca until the winter of 2026.

The defensive midfielder has made 8 appearances for Boca Juniors but is yet to score or register an assist for them this season across all fronts.

The 21-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Argentina. Varela has represented Argentina at Under-20 level, winning 2 caps.

His performances have seen him become the target of many European clubs including Liverpool.

Jürgen Klopp wants to sign a new defensive midfielder and Varela is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. Klopp has always been a manager who keeps his eyes on the most talented young players across the globe.

Someone with Varela’s skillset will undoubtedly add more quality to Klopp‘s midfield.

The English giants are desperate to make an impact in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old will offer the Liverpool boss the freedom to be more flexible with his formations, tactics and team selections.

According to the report, “Liverpool, Newcastle United and Barcelona are among multiple clubs around Europe keeping tabs on Boca Juniors star Alan Varela, sources have told Football Insider. The 21-year-old midfielder is set to be one of Argentina’s hottest properties this summer. Boca fielded multiple enquiries in January for Varela, including one from Bournemouth, but no deal was agreed and he remained in his homeland. Boca also could have lost their star midfielder to Benfica, who were keen to bolster midfield options after they lost Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea. Liverpool and Newcastle have dispatched scouts to keep an eye on Varela in recent months as they weigh up whether to make a summer move. A bid of around £16-20 million is likely to be enough to land the Boca product and that is a price that is attracting suitors. The battle for his signature will be one to watch throughout summer with Varela keen to land a move, especially to the English Premier League. Liverpool could move as they look to add quality and depth to their midfield in the summer window with the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain expected to leave the club.”

Boca Juniors are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the defensive midfielder, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.

The Reds have to fork out a huge transfer fee if they are genuinely interested in the Argentina international.

Good signing for Liverpool?

It is smart from the club to invest in younger players, rather than splashing out big money on experienced players with no resale value.

If he manages to fulfill his potential with them, the transfer would seem like a bargain in future.

Stylistically, Varela would be a great fit at Anfield.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can beat their rivals to the defensive midfielder’s signature.
