Liverpool join the hunt for Alan Varela

Reports in the British media claim that Liverpool have joined the hunt for Boca Juniors defensive midfielder Alan Varela.

The 21-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

Varela has come through the youth ranks of Boca Juniors and has successfully managed to establish himself as a member of their senior team. He is under contract at Boca until the winter of 2026.

The defensive midfielder has made 8 appearances for Boca Juniors but is yet to score or register an assist for them this season across all fronts.

Boca also could have lost their star midfielder to Benfica, who were keen to bolster midfield options after they lost Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea. Liverpool and Newcastle have dispatched scouts to keep an eye on Varela in recent months as they weigh up whether to make a summer move. A bid of around £16-20 million is likely to be enough to land the Boca product and that is a price that is attracting suitors. The battle for his signature will be one to watch throughout summer with Varela keen to land a move, especially to the English Premier League. Liverpool could move as they look to add quality and depth to their midfield in the summer window with the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain expected to leave the club.”

Boca Juniors are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the defensive midfielder, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.
