Liverpool are looking to sign a midfielder and have identified the 22-year-old as potential transfer target.

Liverpool are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The France international will offer the Liverpool boss the freedom to be more flexible with his formations, tactics and team selections. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

According to the report, “Liverpool are interested in signing Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar to replace Gini Wijnaldum this summer. Aouar has caught the eye with the French giants, with strong speculation over the past year that he could move to Arsenal. The France international is currently valued at £54million, according to L’Equipe, and Jurgen Klopp has been keeping a close eye on his progress. With the Gunners and Juventus missing out last summer, a report states that Klopp wants Aouar to replace Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is expected to leave on a free this summer, with Inter Milan confident of striking a deal. Barcelona and PSG are also keen, but it seems likely that Inter will win the race. Aouar is being viewed as the perfect player to fill Wijnaldum’s Reds’ role. At 22 he also represents the future, given that is eight years younger than the Klopp favourite. The talented playmaker is well known for his technical ability and was once labelled ‘incredible’ by Man City boss Pep Guardiola. Aouar also has a knack of chipping in with goals and is regarded as a more creative option than Wijnaldum.”

Liverpool will have to present a really enticing offer to bring Lyon to the negotiating table. The Reds have the resources to tempt them but it will be interesting to see if they are willing to overpay for the player.

Good signing for Liverpool?

It is smart from the club to invest in younger players, rather than splashing out big money on experienced players with no resale value.

Given Aouar’s talent and potential, he would be a very good signing for Liverpool in the long run.

If he turns out to be a star like many expect, it could be one of the club’s smartest transfers.

How strong that interest is and whether Liverpool will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
