Lazio rumored to be interested in Diego Godin
Lazio need to strengthen their defense in the summer.
The reports in Italy suggested that Lazio are interested in Diego Godin.
The Uruguay international was signed by Atletico Madrid in August 2010 from Villarreal for a fee of 8 million euros. The 32-year-old has a contract until 2019 with the club.
Since his arrival from Villarreal, Godin has scored 23 goals and provided 11 assists in 345 games for Atletico Madrid, including one goal in 40 games in all competitions this season.
The 32-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Uruguay.
His record for Uruguay is also impressive. Godin has scored 8 goals in 115 matches for Uruguay at senior level.
The centre-back has just 12 months remaining on his contract and Atletico Madrid may consider a deal in this transfer window to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
Adding a centre-back remains Lazio’s top priority this summer and Simone Inzaghi will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming weeks.
The report claims that Lazio manager has extensively scouted Diego Godin and is considering a move for the centre-back.
Lazio will be in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
According to Football Italia,”Lazio have set their sights on Atletico Madrid veteran Diego Godin as a potential replacement for Stefan de Vrij. The 32-year-old Uruguay international would bring some valuable experience to the Aquile defence, which is otherwise generally young and promising.”

A move away from Atletico Madrid will not be only the best move for Godin, but also for the club.
How strong that interest is and whether Lazio will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
