Gimenez has played 128 times for Atletico Madrid since signing from Danubio, scoring six goals and creating seven assists in that time.
The 23-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Uruguay.
As a member of Uruguay national football team, Jose Maria Gimenez won 39 caps and he scored four goals.
