The defensive department of the Chelsea squad needs quality additions this summer.
Chelsea are targeting Bayern Munich right-back Benjamin Pavard, according to the football transfer rumours in German media.
The 26-year-old has two years left on his current contract which expires in 2024.
He is considered to be one of the best right-backs in France. Pavard has left his mark at the international stage after netting two goals in 45 senior appearances for the France national team.
His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Thomas Tuchel is looking to shore up his defensive options and Bayern’s Benjamin Pavard happens to be a target.
The France international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Tuchel wants to target in the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old has been a good servant for Bayern, and is a right-back who places himself in the right positions in defensive situations. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.
According to the report, “Chelsea are eyeing Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard. Sky Deutschland says Pavard is wanted by Thomas Tuchel as well as Atletico Madrid and Juventus. France international Pavard, 26, predominantly plays at right-back but his versatility has seen him fill in across the back line for Bayern in recent seasons. Pavard made 35 appearances for Bayern in all competitions last season and has been playing for the German giants since 2019, when he joined from Stuttgart in a £30m deal. For Chelsea, defensive reinforcements are crucial this summer after losing Andreas Christensen to Barcelona and Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid, both on free transfers.”
Euro Football Rumours
The Blues will have to present a really enticing offer to bring Bayern to the negotiating table. They have the resources to tempt them but it will be interesting to see if they are willing to overpay for the player.
Bayern would be wise to keep the France international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.
Good signing for Chelsea?
If Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel are seriously considering a right-back, Pavard could also prove to be a smart option.
Benjamin Pavard has all the skillset required to be a success story at Chelsea. Therefore, it makes sense for Tuchel to step up his attempts to bring the France right-back to Premier League side.
Stylistically, he would be a great fit in Chelsea.
How strong that interest is and whether Chelsea will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
