Chelsea linked with surprise move for Pau Torres

Chelsea appear to have a genuine interest in signing Pau Torres this summer.

The reports in England suggested that Chelsea are linked with surprise move for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres.

The 25-year-old centre-back has played all his life at Villarreal. He has made his way through the youth system at the Spanish club. The centre-back has two years left on his current contract which expires in 2024.

He has banged in five goals in 40 matches this term on all fronts.

The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Spain. Torres has also left his mark at the international stage after netting one goal in 17 senior appearances for the Spain national team.

His performances have seen him become the target of many European clubs including Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel wants to sign a new centre-back and Torres is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. The report claims that Chelsea manager has extensively scouted Torres and is considering a move for the centre-back.

The Blues are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The 25-year-old is often quick to scan the danger and is not shy of getting stuck in with some well-timed tackles to help secure possession back for his side. There is no doubt that Torres will take Chelsea’s defense to a different level.

According to the report, “Chelsea are interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres. The Telegraph says with news Blues defender Antonio Rudiger is set to join Real Madrid this summer, it seems certain the Spain star would have to fill the void left by the versatile German in the Blues backline. Torres would be the stand-out option as Rudiger’s successor, but add they are likely to face competition for his signature from Manchester United. Any business by Chelsea in the transfer market will only be possible once sanctions are lifted following the arrival of new owners. Torres is in England this week for Villarreal’s Champions League semifinal first-leg at Liverpool.”

Chelsea will have to present a really enticing offer to bring Villarreal to the negotiating table. The Blues have the resources to tempt them but it will be interesting to see if they are willing to overpay for the player.

Villarreal would be wise to keep the Spain international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.

Good signing for Chelsea?

If Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel are seriously considering a centre-back, Pau Torres could also prove to be a smart option.

A centre-back of Pau Torres’ ceiling will be a massive addition to Chelsea squad as he will not only improve the overall quality of Tuchel’s starting XI but also add some stability and variety to his defensive department.

Chelsea fans would certainly love to see him arrive at the club.

How strong that interest is and whether Chelsea will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
