Chelsea leading the race for Kalidou Koulibaly

Chelsea need to strengthen their defense in the summer.

It’s claimed by Italian media that Chelsea are leading the race for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegal international was signed by Napoli in July 2014 from Genk for a fee of 7.85 million euros. The 26-year-old has a contract until 2021 with the club.

Koulibaly made 155 appearances across all competitions for Napoli, scoring seven goals and supplying five assists in return.

The 26-year-old is considered to be the best centre-back in Senegal.

Koulibaly has also played 18 games for his country.

The Senegal international will be high in demand this summer, with him having enjoyed a sublime season for Napoli this term.

Chelsea shortlist Koulibaly as prime transfer target in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Senegal international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Antonio Conte wants to target in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea will be in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

According to Calciomercato (via Daily Star), “Chelsea lead the race to sign Napoli central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who has constantly been linked with a move to England over the past couple of seasons. Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old Senegalese stopper, but the Blues reportedly lead the way in what is sure to be a battle to secure his signature this summer.”

Napoli are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the centre-back, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.

Stylistically, he would be a great fit in Chelsea.

How strong that interest is and whether Chelsea will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
