Best Clubs to Never Win the Champions League

The Champions League (previously the European Cup) is the toughest and most prestigious club competitions in football. It is a tournament all clubs want to win, but one that only a few can manage. While there have been the odd surprise winners, the Champions League is usually reserved for Europe’s elite clubs:

  • Real Madrid
  • Barcelona
  • Bayern Munich
  • Manchester United
  • Liverpool
  • AC Milan
  • Juventus
  • Inter Milan

If you’re looking to place a wager at BetMGM West Virginia, you may be interested in betting on the next winner of the Champions League. While this year’s winner come from one of the major clubs that has never won this competition… maybe. Let’s take a look at the biggest clubs to have never won Europe’s top football prize.

Manchester City

Some clubs on this list are controversial, and Manchester City is one of them. In fact, the club has only been a regular in the Champions League over the last 10 years. Before that, Man City was a small regional English club that was in and out of the top flight. It’s wonderful what billionaire owners can do, just ask Chelsea. City’s own bankrolling billionaires have propelled the club to the football elite.

Multiple Premier League titles mean Man City are also dining at the table with the biggest clubs in the world. In the Champions League, the club has largely failed with a semi-final the best showing so far. Still, with billions of pounds spent and Pep Guardiola in charge, it’s amazing City have not yet won the European Cup.

Paris Saint Germain

And so too PSG, a club that is in much the same position as Man City. With billionaire owners, PSG has emerged form the rest of the pack in France to become a European giant. Dominance in the relatively easy Ligue 1 is not enough for PSG as the club targets the Champions League. There has been some true humiliation in the last decade, notably against Barcelona and Manchester United.

However, PSG now have a Champions League final under their belt and will be looking to go one better. With massive investment and players like Neymar and Mbappe leading the line, surely, it’s only a matter of time.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico is so often in the shadow of Barcelona and neighbours Real Madrid that it’s easy to forget the club is massive. A multiple La Liga winner and proven in Europe, Atletico seem to have everything in place… huge new stadium, excellent coach, and strong squad. This is not the first time Atletico has been a challenger in Europe. In fact, the club has made three finals but has failed to take the next step to become a winner.

Arsenal

Arsenal is a strange choice. Is this a true giant club or a large mid-quality club? Sorry Gunners fans, but it’s true Arsenal has never consistently dominated in the Premier League and never been a major contender in Europe. That said, under Arsene Wenger the club played some of the best football ever and also reached the 2006 European Cup final. Considering that era of Arsenal, it is a surprise the club has never won the Champions League. Not least when so many other English clubs have (Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa).
