Benfica linked with fresh move for Phil Jones

The Manchester United centre-back has been identified as one of the club’s potential targets as Jorge Jesus looks to add more reinforcements in the defensive unit.

Phil Jones has been at Manchester United since 2011 when he joined from Blackburn Rovers. The 29-year-old’s contract at United is set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

In 224 appearances for Manchester United, Jones has managed to score 6 goals, and create 10 goals for his teammates.

The Manchester United manager does not see him in his plans and would be open to letting him leave.

The report details that Jorge Jesus feels his defense currently lacks some bite and that he could strengthen this winter. The England international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Jesus wants to target in the next transfer window.

Benfica are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The former Blackburn Rovers man heavily relies on his ability to read the game. It is coupled with his sensible tackling and an excellent sense of positioning, allowing him to repel most of the danger in the defensive third. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

According to the report, “Benfica are eyeing Manchester United defender Phil Jones. The 29-year-old is ready to leave United to play regular football after a number of frustrating seasons blighted by injuries. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed he is ready to let players leave next month as he believes United’s squad is too big and any offer from Benfica would be considered, says the Daily Mail. The Portuguese side, currently third in the Primeira Liga, are looking to bring in a versatile defender on loan and that could suit Jones as he looks to put himself in the shop window. His last competitive game for United was when he scored in the 6-1 FA Cup victory over Tranmere in January 2020.”

It is claimed that Manchester United are open to letting Jones go.

Good signing for Benfica?

If Jones is available for the right price, then he could be a clever acquisition for Benfica.

Phil Jones has all the skillset required to be a success story at Benfica. Therefore, it makes sense for Jorge Jesus to step up his attempts to bring the England centre-back to his team.

A move to Benfica is exactly what Jones needs to reignite his career, and we hope he is able to do just that.

Will Phil Jones be a Benfica player soon? Only time will tell.
