Barcelona to consider bid for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano

There has been intense speculation surrounding the future of Dayot Upamecano in the last period.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Barcelona will consider bid for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

The France international joined RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee in the region of 10 million euros in January 2017. The 19-year-old has three years left on his current contract which expires in 2021.

Upamecano made 48 appearances across all competitions for RB Leipzig, scoring one goal.

The 19-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in France.

Barcelona are scouting the 19-year-old, who has been in considerably impressive form in recent times.

Dayot Upamecano has represented France at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 33 caps and scoring one goal.

Adding a centre-back remains Barcelona’s top priority this summer and Ernesto Valverde will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming weeks.

Valverde has always been a manager who keeps his eyes on the most talented young players across the globe.

Barcelona have built a reputation for recruiting young talent from within Europe, predominantly targeting those with sell-on value and immense potential.

According to Calciomercato (via Telefoot), “Barcelona are preparing to offer €100 million for Dayot Upamecano, according to Telefoot in France. The Leipzig defender has risen to stardom at only 19 years of age, helping Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side end last season in second place, and challenge for a spot in Europe once again this season.”

RB Leipzig would be wise to keep the France international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.

Barcelona are reportedly facing competition from PSG and Juventus in their pursuit of RB Leipzig centre-back.

The 19-year-old is certainly a player that would strengthen the current Barcelona squad and would be a good buy in the summer transfer window.

If he turns out to be a star like many expect, it could be one of the club’s smartest transfers.
