Barcelona linked with Florian Wirtz
Barcelona are reportedly keeping a close eye on many midfielders across the Europe.
According to the football transfer rumours in Italian media, Barcelona are linked with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
The 18-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.
Bayer Leverkusen spent 200,000 euros to sign the Germany international from 1. FC Köln in the winter of 2020. The 18-year-old has four years left on his current contract which expires in 2026.
He has banged in 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 28 matches this term on all fronts.
Florian Wirtz has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Germany. He has represented Germany at Under-15, Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 level, winning 16 caps and scoring 2 goals, before making his senior international debut in September 2021. As a member of Germany national football team, Wirtz won 4 caps.
His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Barcelona are looking to sign a midfielder and have identified the 18-year-old as potential transfer target.
The report claims that Barcelona manager has extensively scouted Wirtz and is considering a move for the midfielder.
Barcelona are desperate to make an impact in the summer transfer window.
The Bundesliga player is highly talented and he has a big future ahead of himself. His versatile nature can help the manager to be more flexible with the formations.
According to the report, “Barcelona are watching Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports Barca are one of the clubs following Wirtz. In fact, in an interview around a month ago with BILD, the player declared that when he was little he “always wanted to play for Barcelona. That has not changed, but I still have time until that could arrive”. Bayer are unlikely to let the talented 18-year-old leave this summer after recently extending his contract until 2026. Reports in Germany say an exit would not be possible before 2023. In addition to Barça, Bayern Munich are one of the other clubs that like Wirtz.”

Barcelona will have to present a really enticing offer to bring Bayer to the negotiating table. The Spanish giants have the resources to tempt them but it will be interesting to see if they are willing to overpay for the player.
Bayer Leverkusen would be wise to keep the Germany international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.
Should Barcelona pursue Florian Wirtz?
If Barcelona and Xavi are seriously considering a midfielder, Wirtz could also prove to be a smart option.
It is smart from the club to invest in younger players, rather than splashing out big money on experienced players with no resale value.
This could be a very interesting move, Wirtz has lots of potential and Barcelona could be the perfect place for him to develop as a player.
How strong that interest is and whether Barcelona will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
