Atletico Madrid to make a move for Yeray Alvarez

Atletico Madrid need to strengthen their defense this summer.

According to the football transfer rumours in Spanish media, Atletico Madrid are set to sign Athletic Club defender Yeray Alvarez.

The 24-year-old has three years left on his current contract which expires in 2022.

Alvarez made 79 appearances across all competitions for Athletic Club, supplying 3 assists in return.

Yeray Alvarez has represented Spain at Under-21 level, winning two caps.

The Spain international has impressed in La Liga this season and is starting to attract the interest of bigger clubs.

Diego Simeone is looking to shore up his defensive options and Athletic Club’s Yeray Alvarez happens to be a target. He is a known admirer of the player and is reportedly keen on the idea of bringing him this summer.

According to Football Espana, “Atletico Madrid plan to activate the €30m release clause of Athletic Club Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez this summer, report El Mundo. The central defender has twice overcome testicular cancer, but after missing nine months of action he has been a fixture in Athletic’s first-team squad since February 2018. A host of defenders are leaving Atleti this summer – the exits of Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin and Juanfran Torres have all been confirmed. The report claims Atleti already have a transfer budget of €176m this summer while that figure could rise to a total of €246m should midfielder Rodri’s €70m release clause be activated this summer. Porto defender Felipe is also thought to be close to agreeing a deal to join Atleti this summer.”
