Atletico Madrid preparing move for Mauro Icardi

It’s no secret that Atletico Madrid are interested in Mauro Icardi. But who isn’t?

It’s claimed by Spanish media that Atletico Madrid are preparing move for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.

The Argentina international joined Inter Milan from Sampdoria for a fee in the region of 13 million euros in July 2013. His contract expires in the summer of 2021.

Icardi has played 212 times for Inter Milan since signing from Sampdoria, scoring 123 goals and creating 27 assists in that time.

As a member of Argentina national football team, Mauro Icardi won 8 caps and he scored one goal.

Atletico Madrid have built a reputation for recruiting talent from within Europe, predominantly targeting those with sell-on value and immense potential.

The Atletico Madrid manager has been impressed by his performances this season and could make a move this summer.

The Argentina international provides a unique blend between a classic center-forward and the modern striker.

According to Football Espana, “Atletico Madrid will look to sign Inter striker Mauro Icardi this summer should either Antoine Griezmann or Diego Costa leave, say Diario AS. The 25-year-old is one of Europe’s elite goal scorers and has 16 goals for the campaign despite falling out of favour with the club’s hierarchy amid uncertainty surrounding his future. The report claims that Costa is likely to be sold this summer should a lucrative offer come in for the striker – who has struggled for form and fitness over the past 12 months – from the Chinese Super League. The striker was stripped of the Nerazzurri captaincy earlier this year and did not featured in the first team for six weeks, before being restored to action this month. Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic have also been linked to Atleti.”

Inter are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the striker, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.

Signing the 26-year-old in the summer transfer window would be a masterstroke from Diego Simeone.

How strong that interest is and whether Atletico Madrid will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
