The defensive department of the Aston Villa squad needs quality additions this winter.
According to the football transfer rumours in British media, Aston Villa are interested in Joe Gomez.
Liverpool spent 4.9 million euros to sign the England international from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015. The 24-year-old has three years left on his current contract which expires in 2024.
The centre-back has featured in only 7 matches for Liverpool this term in all competitions.
Adding a centre-back remains Aston Villa’s top priority this winter and Steven Gerrard will have drafted a shortlist of a number of possible targets he could approach in the coming weeks.
Gerrard is a firm fan of Liverpool centre-back and Aston Villa could make a move for the player if the financial aspect makes sense.
Aston Villa are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
The former Charlton Athletic man is a very comfortable defender and has qualities which would improve the Aston Villa’s backline. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.
According to the report, “Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is interesting Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard. The Sunday Mirror says Gerrard has made signing a new defender a ‘priority’ for that window and is ‘actively looking’ for potential targets. One of the players said to be on his radar is Liverpool defender Gomez, with Gerrard eyeing a raid on his former club. A significant injury he suffered last season, combined with the summer signing of Ibrahima Konate, has seen the Englishman drop down the pecking order at Anfield. He is now seen as the fourth-choice centre-back by boss Jurgen Klopp, with Virgil van Dijk, Konate and Joel Matip all ahead of him. That has seen him restricted to two substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this term, totalling just 13 minutes.”
Euro Football Rumours
The Reds are reluctant to let Gomez go, but a big enough bid could persuade them to sell.
Should Aston Villa pursue Joe Gomez?
If Gomez is available for the right price, then he could be a clever acquisition for Villa.
All in all, Gomez will be an ideal choice for Gerrard as he ticks all the right boxes in terms of what he demands from his defenders.
How strong that interest is and whether Aston Villa will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
