Arsenal keen on Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

It is pretty evident that Arsenal is set to strengthen the midfield in the winter transfer window.

According to multiple reports emanating from Italy, Arsenal are keen on Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The 27-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

The White and Sky Blues spent 12 million euros to sign the Serbia international from Genk in the summer of 2015. He has one and a half years left on his current contract which expires in 2024.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has scored seven goals and assisted eight more across all competitions this season.

The 27-year-old is considered to be one of the best midfielders in Serbia. His record for Serbia is also impressive. Milinkovic-Savic has scored seven goals in 39 matches for Serbia at senior level.

His performances have seen him become the target of many European clubs including Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta is eager to add a midfielder to the squad. He wants an experienced player that can be a leader on and off the pitch for him. Arteta is a firm fan of Lazio midfielder and Arsenal could make a move for the player if the financial aspect makes sense.

The Gunners are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The former Genk man will offer the Arsenal boss the freedom to be more flexible with his formations, tactics and team selections. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

According to the report, “Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is ready to solve issues in midfield with a new signing in January. The Gunners are at the top of the Premier League table during the World Cup break. Arteta, who knows that his squad depth is not the best, was not able to sign Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa on deadline day in the summer. Per Corriere della Sera, Arsenal are switching their attention to Lazio’s Serbian midfield star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The all-action midfielder was impressive at the World Cup with Serbia, while he has been a reliable performer in Serie A for years. The source adds that given Milinkovic-Savic is out of contract in 2024, Lazio may be willing to sell in January or the summer to recoup a significant fee. However, the player is settled in Italy and would need a lot of convincing to join another club.”

Arsenal have to fork out a huge transfer fee if they are genuinely interested in the Serbia international.

The White and Sky Blues feel under no pressure to sell and will “demand a significant fee” before letting him go.

Good signing for Arsenal?

If Arsenal and Arteta are seriously considering a midfielder, Milinkovic-Savic could also prove to be a smart option.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has all the skillset required to be a success story at Emirates Stadium. Therefore, it makes sense for Mikel Arteta to step up his attempts to bring the Serbia midfielder to Premier League side.

Stylistically, he would be a great fit in Arsenal.

It will be interesting to see whether Arsenal will make their move during the winter transfer window.
