midfielder Marten de Roon has emerged as a surprise target for Southampton ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to the football transfer rumours in British Media, Southampton are linked with Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon.

The Netherlands international was signed by Middlesbrough in July 2016 from Atalanta for a fee of 15 million euros. The 26-year-old has a valid contract with Middlesbrough until June 2020.

Since his arrival from Atalanta, Marten de Roon has scored five goals in 35 games for Middlesbrough in all competitions this season.

The 26-year-old is considered to be one of the best midfielders in Netherlands.

The Netherlands international has been in fine form for Middlesbrough this season.

Marten de Roon has represented Netherlands at Under-19 level, winning three caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in November 2016. As a member of Netherlands national football team, Marten de Roon has won one cap.

The Netherlands international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of midfield player Claude Puel wants to target in the summer transfer window.

Southampton manager Claude Puel wants to continue to strengthening his squad so they’re able to compete domestically next season.

Euro Football Rumours understood that Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Watford are apparently trailing Southampton in the pursuit of Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon.

How strong that interest is and whether Southampton will make a summer move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
