Newcastle and West Ham United battle to signing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, according to the football transfer rumours in British Media.
Jermain Defoe has joined Sunderland from Toronto FC for a fee in the region of 3.5 million euros in January 2015. The 34 year-old has a valid contract with Sunderland until the June 2019.
Since his arrival from Toronto FC, Jermain Defoe has scored 36 goals and provided four assists in 86 games for Sunderland.
Defoe has also represented England at Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 level, winning 38 caps across all age groups and scoring seven goals. Since March 2004, Jermain Defoe is a member of England national football team, winning 56 and scoring 20 goals.
The 34-year-old veteran is considered to be one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
The England international has been in fantastic form for the Sunderland this season.
Jermain Defoe has been target of Rafael Benítez and Slaven Bilic as the managers look to bolster their attacking options for the next season.
Euro Football Rumours understood that Jermain Defoe could join Newcastle or West Ham United on a free transfer if Sunderland are relegated.
Newcastle and West Ham United aren’t the only ones who are reportedly interested in the 34-year-old. Bournemouth are also thought to be tracking him.
