Newcastle set to sign Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina
goalkeeper Pepe Reina has emerged as a surprise target for Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to the football transfer rumours in Italian Media, Newcastle United are set to sign Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
The Spain international has joined Napoli from Bayern Munich for a fee in the region of 2 million euros in July 2015. The 34-year-old has a valid contract with Napoli until June 2018.
Since his arrival from Bayern Munich, Pepe Reina has conceded 137 goals and provided 45 clean sheets in 135 games for Napoli, including conceded 57 goals and provided 14 clean sheets in 48 games in all competitions this season.
The Spain international has been in fine form for Napoli this season.
Pepe Reina has represented Spain at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 level, winning 32 caps, before making his senior international debut in August 2005. As a member of Spain national football team, Pepe Reina has won 34 caps.
There has been no movement on Pepe Reina agreeing a contract extension at Napoli, and he will be on the radar of many English clubs during the summer.
Pepe Reina has been long term target of Rafa Benitez as the manager look to bolster his goalkeeping options for the next season.
Euro Football Rumours understood that Rafa Benitez will reportedly be handed a huge transfer kitty this summer and the Napoli goalkeeper is thought to be among the manager’s priorities.
How strong that interest is and whether Newcastle United will make a summer move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
