Newcastle join Aston Villa in race for Joe Gomez
Newcastle could solve their issues at centre-back this summer as they eye up a move for Joe Gomez.
According to multiple reports emanating from England, Newcastle have joined Aston Villa in race for Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez.
The England international joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic for a fee in the region of 4.9 million euros in July 2015. His contract expires in the summer of 2024.
The centre-back has featured in 13 matches this term in all competitions.
He is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in England. As a member of England national football team, Gomez won 11 caps.
Eddie Howe wants to sign a new centre-back and Gomez is one of the names at the top of his wishlist.
The England international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Howe wants to target in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
The former Charlton Athletic man is often quick to scan the danger and is not shy of getting stuck in with some well-timed tackles to help secure possession back for his side. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.
According to the report, “Newcastle have joined Aston Villa interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. The Athletic reports Newcastle and Aston Villa are likely to be near the front of the queue to sign Gomez should Liverpool decide to sell the defender this summer. Gomez has endured a hugely frustrating season. He had barely played any minutes in the Premier League before getting through the 90 at the weekend as the Reds beat Norwich City. The Athletic makes it clear that there has, so far, been no suggestion that Gomez is looking to leave Anfield. However, his contract will have two years left to run in the summer. And should Liverpool decide to cash in on Gomez, Aston Villa and Newcastle may well make a move. The Magpies’ ability to enter the race, of course, will largely depend on whether they manage to stay up.”
