Everton join Man Utd in race for PSV star Cody Gakpo
PSV’s winger, Cody Gakpo, has become the latest name to be linked with Everton.
The latest reports in England suggest that Everton have joined United in race for PSV winger Cody Gakpo.
The 23-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
In 141 appearances for PSV, Gakpo has managed to score 45 goals, and create 37 goals for his teammates.
He is considered to be one of the best wingers in Netherlands. The PSV winger has also represented the Netherlands at various youth levels before going on to secure 7 senior caps for his country thus far.
Cody Gakpo has been in impressive form for PSV last season and it looks like he caught the eye of many European clubs including Everton.
Frank Lampard is looking to shore up his attacking options and Gakpo happens to be a target. He is a firm fan of PSV winger and Everton could make a move for the player if the financial aspect makes sense.
The Toffees are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.
The 23-year-old is a dynamic winger, who possesses good technical skills and ball control. He will add more quality to Everton’s attack.
According to the report, “Everton are reportedly preparing a swoop for Cody Gakpo, after a Toffees scout went to watch him play for PSV in a recent game. Gakpo has been the subject of major interest for much of the summer. Indeed, a host of sides have been linked with a transfer for the Dutchman. The Sun reports that Everton are preparing a shock bid for him. Indeed, the report states that they sent a scout to watch him play against Rangers in the recent Champions League playoff. The winger played the entire 90 minutes, and assisted PSV’s second goal in the 2-2 draw. What’s more, the report states that the Dutch side may sell Gakpo if they do not win the second leg of the playoff, as they would miss out on group stage money. There is no mention of how much Everton will be willing to spend on the 23-year-old. However, there may be a hotly-contested battle between them and United for his signature.”
Euro Football Rumours
The Toffees will have to come up with the right proposal to convince Gakpo to join the club.
PSV would be wise to keep the Netherlands international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.
Good signing for Everton?
Undoubtedly, he would be a fantastic recruit for Everton.
A winger of Gakpo’s ceiling will be a massive addition to Everton squad as he will not only improve the overall quality of Lampard’s starting XI but also add some stability and variety to his attacking department.
How strong that interest is and whether Everton will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
