Chelsea eyeing move for Lens wing-back Jonathan Clauss
The defensive department of the Chelsea squad needs quality additions this summer.
According to multiple reports emanating from France, Chelsea are eyeing move for Lens wing-back Jonathan Clauss.
The France international joined Lens from Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer in July 2020.
The 29-year-old is considered to be one of the best wing-backs in France. Clauss has earned 4 senior caps for the France national team but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his nation.
His contract at Lens is about to expire in 12 months and a number of clubs are said to be monitoring his situation, with Chelsea showing the most concrete interest in an attempt to lure the player to their team.
Chelsea are looking to sign a wing-back and have identified the 29-year-old as potential transfer target.
The report claims that Chelsea manager has extensively scouted Clauss and is considering a move for the wing-back.
Jonathan Clauss is a skilled wing-back who can make a difference at both ends of the pitch. His versatile nature can help the manager to be more flexible with the formations.
According to the report, “Chelsea are reportedly interested in Lens wing-back Jonathan Clauss. The France international has decided against re-signing with Lens, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. La Voix du Nord claims both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have looked at signing Clauss this summer in a cut-price deal. The 29-year-old would be available for just €10m. Clauss, who scored five times and assisted 11 goals last season, would be brought in by Chelsea as cover for Reece James at right-back.”
Euro Football Rumours
If Chelsea are genuinely interested, a deal would not be impossible to complete.
Lens are preparing to sell their wing-back should they receive right offer for him.
Good signing for Chelsea?
The Blues could benefit by signing Clauss as the wing-back is one of the areas of concern for Tuchel.
Clauss has all the skillset required to be a success story at Chelsea. Therefore, it makes sense for Thomas Tuchel to step up his attempts to bring the France wing-back to Premier League side.
If Tuchel sees him as the right man for his side, Chelsea should quickly make a move to fend off interest from other clubs.
