Barcelona preparing move for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez
The upcoming summer will see Barcelona improving their defensive department.
According to the football transfer rumours in Spanish media, Barcelona are preparing move for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez.
The Argentina international joined Ajax from Defensa for a fee in the region of 7 million euros in July 2019. His contract expires in the summer of 2025.
He has featured in 37 matches for Ajax this term, netting one goal and providing four assists in all competitions.
The 24-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Argentina. As a member of Argentina national football team, Martinez won six caps.
His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.
Xavi wants to sign a new centre-back and Lisandro Martinez is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. He is a long term admirer of Martinez and believes he can get the most out of the Argentina international.
The former Defensa man has a good defensive mind, someone who can spot attacking threats and nullify them. His arrival would give Barcelona some much needed tactical flexibility.
According to the report, “Barcelona are interested in Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez. Sport says Barca like the Argentine defender and sporting director Mateu Alemany may travel to Amsterdam to open talks with Ajax to find out their position on a possible transfer. Lisandro has been linked with Barça for several years. The left-sided centre-back has been at a good level for a while now and Barça have good reports on him from the games they have watched him live. Any operation would not be easy, though, because he has a contract until 2025. Therefore, Ajax would likely command a decent fee.”
Euro Football Rumours
Ajax are not in a position where they need to sell and would like to keep hold of the centre-back, but right offer may force the club to consider a deal.
Barcelona might have to pay over the odds to sign the centre-back.
Good signing for Barcelona?
Nevertheless, Lisandro Martinez stands as an excellent option for Barcelona.
The 24-year-old could be a very good squad player for Xavi over the next few years. He is at the peak of his career right now and Xavi could bring out the best in him.
If Xavi sees him as the right man for his side, Barcelona should quickly make a move to fend off interest from other clubs.
