Barcelona monitoring Almeria centre-back Kaiky Fernandes

Reports in the Spanish media claim Barcelona are monitoring Almeria centre-back Kaiky Fernandes.

The 18-year-old has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

Almeria spent 7 million euros to sign the Brazil international from Santos in the summer 2022. He has six years left on his current contract which expires in 2028.

The centre-back has featured in 8 matches for Almeria this term in all competitions.

The 18-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Brazil. Fernandes has represented Brazil at Under-16 level, winning seven caps.

His impressive performances this season have apparently caught the eye of some of Europe’s big clubs.

Barcelona are looking to sign a centre-back and have identified the 18-year-old as potential transfer target.

The report claims that Barcelona manager has extensively scouted Fernandes and is considering a move for the centre-back.

The former Santos man heavily relies on his ability to read the game. It is coupled with his sensible tackling and an excellent sense of positioning, allowing him to repel most of the danger in the defensive third.

According to the report, “Barcelona are watching Almeria defender Kaiky Fernandes. Sport says Barcelona had first refusal on the 18-year-old defender when he left Santos (and still have the same option on promising winger Angelo Gabriel). However, they did not move when Almeria, backed by Saudi Arabian investment, offered €7 million in July. This summer, when the centre-back was already training under the orders of Rubi at Almeria, Barça met with his agents in Miami during their tour of the United States. They wanted to try and secure another purchase option with a fixed price. Almeria, though, were not prepared to accept as they don’t want Kaiky’s future to be linked with anyone else. The approach indicates that Barça still have the youngster on the radar and will monitor his development in LaLiga in the short-term.”

Euro Football Rumours

It would take a huge offer from Barcelona to prise the 18-year-old centre-back from Almeria.

Almeria would be wise to keep the Brazil international, but if they do let him go expect it to be for a hefty sum.

Good signing for Barcelona?

If Fernandes is available for the right price, then he could be a clever acquisition for Barcelona.

Kaiky Fernandes has all the skillset required to be a success story at Barcelona. Therefore, it makes sense for Xavi to step up his attempts to bring the Brazil centre-back to La Liga side.

How strong that interest is and whether Barcelona will make a move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
