Arsenal submit bid for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo

Arsenal are known for going under the radar and signing some hidden gems in the transfer window.

The reports in Portugal suggested that Arsenal have submitted bid for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.

He has been subject to interest from various European clubs.

Benfica spent 2.1 million euros to sign the Spain international from Barcelona B in the winter of 2016. He has one year left on his current contract which expires in 2023.

The left-back finished the 2021/22 season with a tally of 6 goals and 9 assists from 47 matches across all competitions.

He is considered to be one of the best left-backs in Spain. Grimaldo has represented Spain at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 21 caps and scoring one goal.

The left-back has just 12 months remaining on his contract and Benfica may consider a deal in this transfer window to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.

Mikel Arteta wants to sign a new left-back and Alex Grimaldo is one of the names at the top of his wishlist. Arteta is a firm fan of Benfica left-back and Arsenal could make a move for the player if the financial aspect makes sense.

The Gunners are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The former Barcelona man is a very comfortable defender and has qualities which would improve the Arsenal’s backline. He has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

According to the report, “Arsenal have put in a £6.4 million offer for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo. The Gunners are eager to add an experienced defender to rotate with Kieran Tierney in that spot. While they were hoping to secure Lisandro Martinez, the Gunners may have to concede that Manchester United are more likely to prize him away from Ajax. According to A Bola, Arsenal have turned their attention to the much cheaper Grimaldo. The Spaniard has been with Benfica since 2016, and is rated as one of the most consistent defenders in Europe. He is out of contract next summer, which means the Portuguese giants are ready to cash in on him immediately.”

If Arsenal can agree on a fee with Benfica, the deal should be easy to complete.

The Portuguese giants will not be able to demand a significant fee for Grimaldo since his current deal is set to expire in 2023.

Good signing for Arsenal?

The 26-year-old is certainly a player that would strengthen the current Arsenal squad and would be a good buy in the summer transfer window.

Grimaldo has all the skillset required to be a success story at Arsenal. Therefore, it makes sense for Mikel Arteta to step up his attempts to bring the Spanish left-back to Premier League side.

Stylistically, he would be a great fit in London.

If Mikel Arteta sees him as the right man for his side, Arsenal should quickly make a move to fend off interest from other clubs.
