Southampton chasing Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson

According to the football transfer rumours in Italian Media, Southampton are chasing Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson.

Pontus Jansson has joined Leeds United from Torino on loan until the end of the season for a fee in the region of 4 million euros. The 26 year-old has a valid contract with Torino until June 2020.

Since his arrival from Torino, Pontus Jansson has scored three goals and provided three assists in 34 games for Leeds United in all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in Sweden.

Pontus Jansson has represented Sweden at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 36 caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in January 2012. As a member of Sweden national football team, Jansson has won 12 caps.

The Sweden international is a player who has impressed many Premier League clubs in the last season, and it is understood that Southampton manager Claude Puel would prefer playing him as a centre-back.

Euro Football Rumours understood that Pontus Jansson is seen as a potential replacement for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.

How strong that interest is and whether Southampton will make a summer move remains to be seen but it is certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
