Newcastle eyeing move for Anderlecht centre-back Kara Mbodji

Newcastle United appear to have a genuine interest in signing Anderlecht centre-back Kara Mbodji this winter.

According to the football transfer rumours in British media, Newcastle United are eyeing move for Anderlecht centre-back Kara Mbodji.

The Senegal international has joined Anderlecht from Genk for a fee in the region of 3 million euros in August 2015. The 28-year-old has a valid contract with Anderlecht until June 2020.

Mbodji made 91 appearances across all competitions for Anderlecht, scoring 7 goals and supplying 7 assists in return.

The 28-year-old is considered to be one of the best centre-backs in Senegal.

Kara Mbodji has represented Senegal at Under-23 level, winning 4 caps and scoring one goal, before making his senior international debut in September 2012. As a member of Senegal national football team, Kara Mbodji has won 42 caps and has scored 5 goals.

The Senegal international is high in demand, with him having enjoyed a sublime season for Anderlecht this term.

The Senegal international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of defensive player Rafael Benítez wants to target in the winter transfer window.

Rafael Benítez will reportedly be handed a huge transfer kitty this winter and the Anderlecht centre-back is thought to be among the manager’s priorities.

Newcastle United will be in the market for just a handful of statement signings this winter who can improve the first-team.

The 28-year-old would be a very good addition for Newcastle United and they can afford him as well.

According to the report in British media, Newcastle United are widely expected to be strengthening their squad during the upcoming January transfer window and they are currently eyeing a move for Mbodji, who could be available for around 12 million euros. Magpies are one of the club’s to have spoken with Kara Mbodji’s agent about a January move to the Premier League. Leicester City, Swansea City, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas are other clubs with an interest in the 28-year-old.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Newcastle United come calling for Kara Mbodji in January.
