Celtic keen on Newcastle centre-back Chancel Mbemba

Celtic are reportedly one of many clubs keeping tabs on DR Congo international.

According to the football transfer rumours in British media, Celtic are keen on Newcastle United centre-back Chancel Mbemba.

The DR Congo international was signed by Newcastle United in July 2015 from Anderlecht for a fee of 12 million euros. The 23-year-old has a contract until 2020 with the club.

Mbemba made 58 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle United, scoring one goal.

His record for DR Congo is impressive. The 23-year-old has scored three goals in 41 matches for DR Congo at senior level.

Chancel Mbemba is one of the more likely players to be offloaded by Newcastle United this winter and the list of suitors in the DR Congo international continues to grow.

The report details that Brendan Rodgers feels his defense currently lacks some bite and that he could strengthen this month.

Mbemba has been long term target of Brendan Rodgers as the manager look to bolster his defensive options for the second part of the season.

According to the report, Brendan Rodgers is attempting to beat Anderlecht in the race for the DR Congo captain. The ex-Liverpool manager hopes to reinforce the Premiership champions’ squad as they chase a domestic Treble as well as Europa League success. Reports in the Congo and Belgium claim Mbemba is also a target for his former side Anderlecht.

Will Chancel Mbemba be a Celtic or Anderlecht player soon? Only time will tell.

A move away from Newcastle United is not only the best move for Chancel Mbemba, but also for the club.
