Atletico Madrid need to strengthen their midfield in the summer.
According to the football transfer rumours in Spanish media, Atletico Madrid are leading the race for Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.
The Germany international joined Schalke from MSV Duisburg on a free transfer in 2009.
Since his arrival from Duisburg, Max Meyer has scored 22 goals and provided 24 assists in 190 games for Schalke, including one goal and one assist in 26 games in all competitions this season.
Max Meyer is 22-year-old and has his peak years ahead.
Max Meyer has represented Germany at Under-15, Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level, winning 61 caps and scoring 26 goals, before making his senior international debut in May 2014. As a member of Germany national football team, Meyer won four caps and he scored one goal.

Atletico Madrid shortlist Meyer as prime transfer target. The Germany international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of midfielder Diego Simeone wants to target in the summer transfer window.
According to Football Espana (via Diario AS and Bild), “The 22-year-old is out of contract at the Gelsenkirchen-based club in June and there are no indications he will renew his deal at this late stage. Diario AS cite a report in German publication Bild that Los Rojiblancos have moved into prime position to land the midfielder from Schalke, who are already losing Leon Goretzka to Bayern Munich on a free. The report indicates that following the departure of Yannick Carrasco, Nico Gaitain and Augusto Fernandez in January, Atleti are keen to bolster a squad which contains just 17 outfield players.”
Atletico Madrid are reportedly facing competition from Arsenal in their pursuit of Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.
